Medical Gastroenterology

Gastroenterology is a branch of medicine which deals with the study of digestive system and treatment of its disorders, thus exposed to the diseases related to esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts and liver.

The study in this branch is categorically bifurcated into two segments viz; medical and surgical, though both these segments work in close co-ordination for better results to the ailing patient. Practice in medical gastroenterology largely involves the diagnosis and management of patients using medicine and minimally invasive interventions, i.e. endoscopy.

Gastroenterology is largely an outpatient clinic specialty with a smaller proportion of patients needing hospital admission, for example, severe inflammatory bowel disease, and cirrhosis of the liver and gastrointestinal bleeding which usually requires joint management between physicians and surgeons to identify and manage the need and timing of surgery.
